Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre “Teachers Training Course” with Sharat Arora

19 March - 28 April 2018 & 25 July - 3 September 2018 at the Himalaya Shanti Ashram – our Eco Retreat for Yoga, Meditation and Healing

The Yoga Teachers Training Course with master teacher Sharat Arora is a practical training of the application of Asanas and Pranayama for all students levels, situations and age groups. In other words, it is not only about knowing all the details of the Yoga Practice, but actually being able to convey it to others and have enough expertise to guide them on the physical, mental as well as the energetic level.

The Teachers Training Course (TTC) - six-week long, rigorous training - is taking place at the Himalaya Shanti Ashram, our special place for Yoga, Meditation and Healing to enhance a deeper and more focused practice and study.

Yoga Teacher Training India

The first part of the TTC includes the 3 weeks of the Intensive Yoga Course focusing on a specific theme, preparing the students for a deep exploration in their Yoga Practice. This time is dedicated for the intensive daily Practice of Asanas, Meditation, Relaxations and Pranayama - from early morning until sunset. This time is a total retreat where the students devote themselves entirely to self-exploration, change and transformation, leaving very little or no time for other activities.

It is followed then by the 3 weeks of the pedagogical training during which the students focus on all the different aspects of Teaching Yoga to others. It is designed for motivated practitioners who wish to make the spiritual path of Yoga their way of life and would like to share it with others guiding them on that path.

During the Teachers Training pedagogical part of the Course students are expected to prepare themselves by the Self Yoga Practice of inverted positions and Pranayama in the early mornings, so that during the late morning sessions they are able to focus fully and explore in depth each aspect of Asanas revealed in great detail by master teacher Sharat Arora. It is also during these late morning sessions that we learn to diagnose body and mind problems by identifying imbalances & misalignments and how to help them.

During the afternoons, participants learn instructions, the sequencing of the most important postures, as well as the identification of mistakes in the Asanas and their corrections. Moreover the study of Self-Presentation as a teacher is explored in great detail – including all the aspects of the body language as well as the adequate use of the voice, to create motivating positive atmosphere as well as to wake up trust and respect in the students.

Students participating in the Teacher‘s Training Course will be provided with two healthy vegetarian meals without fruit, along with afternoon tea on a daily basis. The fruit is available in the Ashram shop. The daily schedule, course structure and retreat atmosphere follow the same structure as the Intensive Courses. It is expected that Self-Practice is completed each day, before the morning class begins.

The Yoga Teachers Training India Program comprise of :

  • Training and Practice of Asanas, Pranayama and Meditation Techniques,

Obtaining the Yoga Teacher Certificate from Sharat Arora at the Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre

Completion of the Teachers Training Course (TTC) 1st Level does not certify one to teach Yoga – it is only the beginning of a longer program to obtain teaching qualifications. Once the initial TTC has been completed, the Teachers Training Program takes two to three years to complete, depending on the intensity. Following completion of the initial TTC, the student must maintain regular contact with Sharat Arora.

This involves doing at least four 5-Day Courses as well as assisting in 5-Day Courses for minimum 1 year in order to gain practical experience. It is strongly recommended that Teacher Trainees complete the assisting requirements for the first year, immediately following completion of the initial TTC. Any changes needed to be done to the program due to personal reasons should be communicated clearly with master teacher Sharat Arora.

Once finished TTC 1st level, teacher trainees are allowed to come for extended periods of time to learn more about the Therapeutics of Yoga and gain the necessary experience by :

  • Assisting Classes on all students levels of the 5-Day Courses, Therapy Courses, Yoga for Women, Yoga for Kids/Children Students as well as the Intensive Courses,
  • Teaching Classes under the supervision of master teacher Sharat Arora during the 5-Day Courses, Therapy Courses, Yoga for Women, Yoga for Kids/Children Students as well as the Intensive Courses,
  • Having the Personal Supervision and Consultations with master teacher Sharat Arora at each deferent stage of the Yoga Teachers Training Program at the Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre.

During the final year of the whole Teachers Training Program, one must complete the Teachers Training Course 2nd Level. In addition to the practical training classes, the Teacher Trainee is required to complete creative research papers on each of the following subjects, in consultation with master teacher Sharat Arora:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of an Asana or Pranayama;
  • Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras;
  • Hatha Pradipika;
  • Comparison of a religion with Yoga;
  • Ayurvedic Medicine

Each topic has to be 8-12 pages of A4 format written with size of letters 12 in Verdana font type. If it happens that the student writes more on some topics, it is also ok, however it shouldn’t then exceed 30 pages.

The papers must be the original work of each student, based on their own research and practice. The students can use some quotations, but the proportion then should be kept at a reasonable level of 5% quotation – then the source of citation and the author is required – and 95% of the student’s own writing.

It is recommended that Teacher Trainees complete these papers during the first 2 years of the Teachers Training Program.
